“The more we come out and do good to others, the more
our hearts will be purified, and God will be in them.”
These words
of Swami Vivekananda have been my driving force in life. Throughout my school
and college days, I was guided by these words and I am inspired to do social
service and get myself involved in socio-developmental activities. By doing so,
I envisioned a society free of all ills and woes. It is this vision that,
actually, led to the formation of the GLP Social Circle, a socio-cultural
organization dedicated to the well being of the society.
The GLP social Circle
was conceived when society was in strong need of a united front against the
ULFA terror. Since then it has matured into a multifaceted social organization
with considerable contribution in various sectors, such as, literature, health
etc. in the North-East region. When we look back into the foregone years, we
can proudly declare that we had in our own humble way contributed to the well
being of the suffering fellow human beings whether they were the flood affected
people of Assam in 1997 or the victims of Maharashtra earthquake.
The motto of the GLP
Social Circle no doubt has been service to humanity. One of our singular most
achievements, we can proudly say, is the Project Bhootnath. On 20th
January 2000, an MOU was signed with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC)
to beautify the cremation ground at Bhootnath, situated on the foothills of the
Kamakhya temple in the western part of Guwahati by the bank of the river
Brahmaputra. The tireless efforts of the GLP Social Circle members have turned
Bhootnath, into a decent place for mourners to bid last farewell to their near
and dear ones.
Project Bhootnath now also offers a
variety of services including ambulance, dead body carrying van (hearse), free
medical checkup, low cost but modern diagnostic facilities etc. It has a huge
store room for fire wood, cool drinking water facilities, beautiful gardens and
above all a massive arch-way to welcome you in.
A similar MOU was also signed with
GMC to beautify the Navagraha cremation ground at Silpukhuri in the eastern
side of Guwahati.
These two projects are the major
achievements of the GLP Social Circle so far.
In keeping with its motto of
providing succor to the needy and disadvantaged, the GLP Social Circle from
time to time have been organizing free medical checkup camps, polio vaccination
camps and cancer awareness programmes regularly. These facilities have helped
thousands of under privileged people.
Apart from these on the literary and
cultural front, our contributions have been widely acknowledged. We may say
with all humility that GLP Social Circle today is synonymous with sincere
service to society at large and that, actually, inspires us to draw up a number
of projects for the future.
I thank all those who have put in
their efforts for making a strong foundation of the GLP Social Circle which, as
a Socio Cultural organization, has reached an enviable position in the entire
North-Eastern region in a short span since it was founded. Needless to say,
this would not have been possible but for the generous support of the people
and tireless efforts on the part of my associates. I take this opportunity to
thank all these people and hope their services and help will be available in
our future endeavors also.
Regards
G.L. Agarwalla
Chairman, GLP Social Circle
