There has always been a strange feeling when we hear about
the word cremation ground and the overpowering sensation is smell of death. For
the average mortal, it takes an extra bit of courage to enter the place where
the smell of burning human flesh may pierce your nostrils. This is true for any
burial and cremation grounds or for that matter cemetery.
The Bhootnath cremation ground located on the foothills of
the picturesque Nilachal Hills, where presides Goddess Kamakhya, was no
exception. That was so till the GLP Social Circle took over the responsibility
of maintaining this cremation ground. It was on January 20, 2000 that the GLP
Social Circle took over the responsibility of maintaining Bhootnath after an
agreement was signed with the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. Thus was born the
project Bhootnath of GLP Social Circle. Bhootnath, before it was taken over by
the GLP Social Circle, was a place littered with torn clothes from the bodies,
rooting flowers strewn all over, empty agarbatti packets, half burnt firewood
and sometimes even burnt human parts and what not. Today the place is as
beautiful as one’s sitting room. This was made possible only by the untiring
efforts of the members of the GLP Social Circle.
Under the able leadership of its chairman, Mr. G.L. Agarwalla
with active help from Mr. Jayprakash Goenka, Mr. Babulal Agarwal, Mr. Ashok
Agarwal ‘Bhoot’, Jaychand Agarwal ‘Dhubri’ and Anil Tharad the Social Circle
embarked upon a noble mission to make Bhootnath something exceptional and
beautiful, a place for eternal sleep for the dead and where the mourners can
find solace in their hours of distress in peaceful surroundings.
The beautification of Bhootnath did not take place over
night. The process began in 2000 and it is still continuing.
